Gautama uses an elegant system isolation test. If consciousness were an intrinsic property of physical matter (like heat is to fire), then as long as the body is physically there, it should always be awake. But during deep sleep or immediately after death, the physical body structure remains intact while the conscious processing thread drops to zero. This proves consciousness is a separate daemon process running on the hardware, not the hardware itself.
